Undoubtedly, the mystery of outer space is what humans seek to find the answer as one day the Earth might not be enough for living in the long term and there will be no resources for us anymore. That is why the aerospace industry keeps developing and developing from time to time, looking for new habitats and new resources from interstellar space.

The team of engineers, technicians and scientists from NASA, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has come together to brainstorm and look for the most suitable approach, making sure that traveling to the Moon and Mars will be possible for everyone.

In order to do that, there is one mega project emerging with the ambition of returning humans to the moon surface. The project is called the Artemis Program and surprisingly in this year of 2022, this project will have their first test flight ever with the name of “Artemis 1”. This promising moon mission brings up the intriguing possibility of humans traveling to the Moon once again. If the mission is successful, it will become a big step in human aerospace history.

Thus, ACES aviation, the leading aviation media and news archive, is here to explain to you more about Artemis 1 and the Artemis Program. What is this campaign ? What is the purpose of this project ? And Are there any recent updates ? We have gathered those answers for you.

  • Key Elements about Artemis 1
  • Recent Updates of Artemis 1

We believe that this information will provide you a better understanding about Artemis 1. So, to waste no time, let’s launch into what you should know about Artemis 1 together.

What is Artemis 1 and The Artemis Program ?

The Artemis Project

The Artemis program is organized around a series of Space Launch System (SLS) missions. These space missions will increase in complexity and are scheduled to occur more than a year apart from each other. NASA and its partners have planned Artemis I through Artemis IV missions; later Artemis missions have also been proposed. Each SLS mission centers on the launch of an SLS booster carrying an Orion spacecraft. Missions after Artemis II will depend on support missions launched by other organizations and spacecraft for support functions.

The Artemis program is carried out by NASA and its partners like the European Space Agency and the space agency from several countries. It began in December 2017 as the revival of the 2009 U.S. space program. The whole mission consists of Artemis 1 to Artemis 4 and many more further missions if the project runs successfully.

This moon mission showcases the ambition of humanity to break the limitation and paves the way to the era of space exploration, taking human life to the next level.

Artemis 1

Artemis 1 or Artemis I is a test flight part of the mega moon mission, The Artemis Project. It was formerly known as Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1). This project serves as a protection and safety certification for The Artemis Project operation since it is the first uncrewed flight test of the Space Launch System rocket and the Orion spacecraft.

The launch will be operated at Launch Complex 39B (LC-39B) at the Kennedy Space Center. The duration of the mission will be around 25.5 days, where 6 of those days involve orbiting around the Moon. The successful launch and operation of Artemis 1 will ensure that NASA is going in the right direction and can prepare for the next stage of the project which is Artemis 2.

The Purpose of The Moon Mission

The Purpose of Artemis 1

The main purpose of Artemis 1 aims to land the first female astronaut and first astronaut of color on the Moon and continues the legacy from the U.S. space program in 2009. The priority is to deploy CubeSats, a number of small satellites, to experiment and have technology demonstrations. This mission also serves as an uncrewed test-flight, ensuring that they will safely proceed to the next stage of the program without any obstacles.

The Purpose of The Artemis Program

The main objective of this moon mission is to achieve the previous lunar exploration mission from the Apollo program. With new and advanced technology, many experts believe that the Artemis program is able to carry on the mission of the Apollo program and can exceed the further achievements that have never been done before.

Not just for the pride of humanity, this moonbound mission also acts like a new chapter of space exploration, stretching to the Moon and so on. The most ambitious part of the program is not just to go to the Moon but to stay there and have a full investigation on the moon surface in order to discover lunar resources.

Moreover, the success of Artemis 1 and The Artemis Program can set up the foundation for the next space exploration and lunar settlement, providing humans a lot more opportunities in economy, interstellar transportation, new way of living, and even Mars exploration.

Key Elements of Artemis 1

In the Artemis 1 operation, there are several significant factors that are the key to success for this lunar journey. So, we will take a look at some important factors that will help and support Artemis to be operated successfully.

Orion spacecraft

To operate this ultimate mission, one of the factors which plays an important role is the spacecraft. NASA always keeps that in mind. The Orion spacecraft will serve as the main vehicle for this lunar exploration as it consists of many advanced aerospace technologies and is built with high protection for harsh exploration in space. It promises the safe travel experience for its crews, making sure that the operation will be conducted without complication.

Space Launch System

For the rocket launch system, Artemis 1 adapted NASA’s most powerful and developed launch vehicle, Space Launch System (SLS) for its operation. The heavy-lift rocket is designed to carry massive payloads into deep space and ensure that its astronauts will be able to have their journey without unexpected interruption. This NASA’s full-of-capabilities system has potential to be a good start for the moonbound mission.

Recent Updates of Artemis 1

At first, the estimated time of Artemis 1’s launch was set around March to April, but due to several factors the project has been delayed to the summer of 2022. Even though the Artemis program might not meet the previous schedule, that does not decelerate the process of this project.

On early 18 March 2022, The Artemis 1 rocket finally reached Launch Complex 39B, making its public appearance for the first time. Reported by NASA, Artemis 1 will be prepared for wet dress rehearsal which is set to begin 3 April 2022. After that, Artemis 1 will undergo several performance tests and checks, ensuring that there will be no problematic issues in the future.

If the operation at the launch pad goes well as planned, Artemis 1 will be brought back to NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building for the last time. It will then travel to the pad once again for launching to the moon. It is scheduled to be around the early of June.

Final Thoughts

Artemis 1 is the evidence of human ambition. It is a great milestone for the next level of deep space exploration, promising one day we can easily have an interstellar journey to the moon and grow into multiplanetary species in the universe.
